Here are a few questions and answers with Rockingham Bands Musical Director; Roland Spencer
When and where did you start playing?
I learned to play the cornet when I was about 10 at the Salvation Army in Sutton, South London. At the age of 15 I began playing with the senior band quickly moving on to the solo cornet bench. During this time I was to be the MD of the junior band. Following a brief stint as deputy, I was appointed MD of Sutton senior band and the local area youth band.
What significant events have helped shape your musical experience?
I am proud to be a former member of the International Staff Band of the Salvation Army playing under the direction of Bernard Adams, this had a big impact on me as a player and now as a conductor.
Another important musical moment for me was, as MD of the Sutton SA senior band, I took the band on
tour to Sweden.
Another significant event was to be asked by Epsom & Ewell Silver Band to become their MD. This was
my first introduction into the non-SA banding world. Because of this I have had the privilege of working with other bands such as Oughtibridge, Holymoorside, Bakewell, Matlock and Shirebrook bands.
Do you still play?
As well as being the MD of Rockingham Band, I am Vice President of Epsom & Ewell Silver Band and the deputy MD and assistant principal cornet of both the Sheffield Citadel SA Band and Cornerstone Brass.
What is your ambition for Rockingham Band?
Rockingham is a fine band and recently we have seen a number of new younger players come and
join us which gives a good basis for developing the band further. My vision for the band is that we
become a group known for its appealing and pleasing concerts and as a force to be reckoned with on the
contesting scene, whatever section we find ourselves in.
What music do you like to listen to?
It varies depending on my mood. As you will appreciate band music plays a big part in my life – playing,
listening and conducting, so, in no particular order, here are some of my favourites:
The Lord is Gracious
Journey into Freedom
Music of the Spheres
My Comfort and Strength
The Shepherds Song
Hostile Skies
Mozart’s Requiem Mass
Gaudette (Kevin Norbury arrangement)
Anything else we should know?
I have 9 chickens and enjoy skiing and gardening.
